Actor Alec Baldwin Fires Prop Gun Killing a Woman on Film Set
Alec Baldwin, the eldest of Baldwin actor brothers today fired a prop gun on a movie set that killed the photography chief and injured a director, authorities in New Mexico stated.
A statement from the Santa Fe Sheriff’s office said Baldwin, who is acting in and producing the film Rust fired the prop gun during the filming of the movie. Deputies were dispatched to the set in Bonanza Creek Ranch when a 911 caller reported the shooting.
The woman photographer, Halyna Hutchins, was flown to hospital by helicopter but died of her injuries. The director Joel Souza survived and was receiving emergency care.
A spokesperson for Mr. Baldwin told AP news agency the incident involved the use of a prop gun with blanks.
The deceased, Ms Hutchins, 42, was working on the set as director of photography. Mr Souza, 48, was taken from the scene by ambulance, but details of his injuries have not been disclosed.
According to her personal website, Ms Hutchins was from Ukraine and grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She studied journalism in Kyiv, and film in Los Angeles, and was named a “rising star” by the American Cinematographer magazine in 2019.
Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed yet.
A police spokesperson last reported about the director saying he is in a critical condition. Movie sets usually have stringent rules over the use of prop weapons, but accidents have happened time and again.
Baldwin co-produces the film and stars as Harland Rust, an outlaw whose grandson is convicted for murder. He goes on the run with his grandson who has been sentenced to hang for his crime.
Alec Baldwin has starred in a number of blockbusters including ‘The Hunt for Red October’. He also featured in two iterations of the ‘Mission: Impossible franchise. He has also voiced animated characters in hits like ‘Boss Baby’.
