The National Drug Authority (NDA) on Tuesday authorized COVIDEX, a locally made herbal remedy, as ‘supportive treatment’ for COVID-19 after days of back and forth engagements between the regulator and its developer, Prof Patrick Ogwang.
Prior, Ugandans were secretively buying the herbal with the price of the 20ml bottles between a stable Shs10,000 or Shs15,000 with the highest price being Shs30,000.
Within hours after NDA giving pharmacies a green light to officially sell the drug, it quickly shot up to Shs50,000 a bottle.
By Wednesday morning, various reports put the price at over Shs100,000 with a serious case in Jinja where it’s said it may even reach a record Shs200,000 per bottle within a week.
Jumia, Uganda’s online shopping mall, posted a stabilized price of Shs80,000 per bottle.
Prof. Ogwang, the developer assured the public that the medicine is effective in managing the Covid-19 virus.
“Big Pharma told me to stop my research…I refused and prayed to God to guide me,” said Ogwang whose natural plant-based malaria and COVID19 treatment is a game-changer.
“We are grateful for our entire PHAMBIOTRACK Team and Prof Ogwang Patrick. Mbarara University Pharmaceutical Sciences,” Mbarara University shared in the glory.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda came out strongly and supported Ogwang saying COVIDEX is safe for use in COVID19 patients.
