Covidiots: 71 Arrested ‘Sanitizing’ Their Throats In Bars

The Police in Lugazi has 71 people in detention over flouting Ministry of Health guidelines and presidential directives.

According to ASP Hellen Butoto, the Sezibwa region police spokesperson, these people were arrested on Wednesday 14th July 2021 as they were found drinking beer in bars which violate the Ministry of Health guidelines on forestalling the spread of the Coronavirus.

Butoto noted that police carried out the operation after a tip-off from the local village leadership in the communities of Lugazi Municipality that small bars and lodges with bars are operating, ushering in people who received or are yet to get the relief money.

“The Joint operation by sister security agencies started at  8:30PM on Tuesday night  in the slum areas of the Municipality”, Butoto added.

Among the suspects were ladies who were found positioned around the bars and lodges.

Butoto further revealed that two of the officers sustained injuries after some of the drunk suspects turned violent and started stoning them. They are now receiving treatment at Kawolo Hospital.

According to Butoto, among those arrested are 10 ladies including the bar owner. She stresses that the suspects will be charged with doing acts likely to spread an infectious disease.

She appealed to all members of the public to remain vigilant, observe the Ministry of Health SOPs while ensuring the safety of everyone stressing that security agencies shall continue to enforce the guidelines in an effort to curb the spread of the pandemic.
