Kampala: Presidential Hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Bobi Wine has Wednesday met with officials of the Electoral Commission to vent his frustration with the Uganda security forces who have foiled may of his campaign meetings around the country.
Bobi Wine who was supposed to campaign in Jinja today, took the day off to meet with EC Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama at the Commission offices in Kampala.
He was flanked by a team of his NUP Party officials including Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, the party lawyers and a few parliamentary flag bearers.
The Electoral Commission said Bobi Wine and his team had “requested to meet the Returning Officer and Chairperson/Electoral Commission, and members of the Commission, today, Wednesday 2nd December 2020, to make a presentation on issues concerning the conduct of campaigns for Presidential Elections.”
During the meeting, Bobi Wine presented photographic evidence of Police and the Military using a lot of force to disperse his supporters, many of whom have been severely injured and others lost lives.
Bobi Wine’s team and the electoral commission officials are expected to address press later this afternoon before proceeding to Manafwa to carry on with his campaign
Mean While, Uganda Police and military deployed heavily around Kampala city as National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential Candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert was meeting Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama and his team.
The meeting came after Bobiwine suspended presidential campaigns citing excessive security brutality against his supporters.
Bobi Wine’s official car was destroyed when he approached Jinja town. His vehicle was riddled with bullets that forced his tire to puncture, as the police held him from what one of the officers described as an “unmarked” route to the assembly.
It occurred a few minutes after several injured people were recorded in Kayunga district where even Bobi’s immediate police escort, ASP Kato, was shot in the eye, and another person known as Daniel Oyerwot aka Dan Magic producer. The duo was urgently transported to Mulago Hospital when we filed this report.
After receiving complaints from NUP, Electoral Commission responded positively to Bobi Wine’s request to hold a meeting with the EC chairman over what he termed an imbalanced campaign ground.
Kyagulanyi accompanied by a five-person team presented their grievances to EC team which promised to work on their issues.EC also advised NUP leadership to avoid flouting Covid-19 guidelines by holding processions which lead to the spread of the deadly disease.
Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango assured Kampalans that the city was already secured, safe and encouraged people to continue their daily business activities with out any fear.
