Explain Your Relationship: Turkish Businessman Linked With Kenya’s William Ruto Arrested
Immigration officials at the Wilson Airport Saturday arrested Turkish businessman Harun Aydin for questioning after landing from Uganda.
Aydin was one of the individuals who were blocked to Uganda from Kenya with Deputy President William Ruto on Monday, August 2.
He, however, flew to Uganda alongside politicians Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Kapseret counterpart Oscar Sudi, Kinango MP Benjamin Tayari, Elijah Rono, Eric Ruto and David Langat.
Sudi claimed he had boarded the same police vehicle with Aydid and driven to Kilimani Police Station where the foreign national was locked up.
“I boarded the same police vehicle but upon reaching Kilimani police station, he was locked in the cell leaving me outside….I’m just here outside Kilimani. I want to be arrested too,” he reacted.
The Tanga Tanga legislator dismissed reports that Aydin had past terror links.
“I had made it clear that if indeed Aydin is a terrorist, then I should be the first one to be arrested. They allege they want to interrogate him but they are trying to provoke the Deputy President because he remained silent when they blocked him from traveling,” he added.
The embassy said Aydin is an investor who has visited Kenya several times in the past using his Turkish passport.
The embassy further claimed the 54-year-old was just an investor who came to Kenya purposely for business work, and he is not a wanted person as many claimed.
“Turkish investor, Aydin Harun, is a victim of top-down arrogance bred by patronage and cartels that criminalize enterprise,” Ruto said.
“Importers’ goods declared contraband, Africa spirits closed, keroche harassed, now an investor with valid papers labeled a terrorist, this is a tragedy of political pettiness,” he added.
