Express FC today hosts Sudanese giants Al Merrikh in their CAF Champions League return since 1997.
Today Startimes Uganda Premier League champions Express Football Club will play their first continental match since 2008 and the first CAF Champions League match since 1997.
The Red Eagles emerged Champions of the Uganda Premier League 2020-21 season after the football federation referred to the competition rules that saw the Wankulukuku based side clinch their 7th league title as they were on top as the competition was declared unable to proceed after the total COVID 19 lockdown.
This granted Express FC a ticket to the CAF Champions League which they start off today as they host Sudanese 16 time champions Al Merrikh SC.
Today against Sudanese giants, coach Simon Kirumira will stand in for head coach Wasswa Bossa whose CAF B coaching licence doesn’t qualify him to stand as head of this stage’s technical bench.
Wasswa Bossa has been instrumental in the club’s recent success as he has been the man on bench as the Red Eagles clinched a double that is the Uganda Premier League and the CECAFA Kagame Cup and this absence could somehow affect the camp negatively.
The good news from the team’s camp is that all players are fit for selection including the likes of Lwesibawa that had come down with injuries and illnesses. Godfrey Lwesibawa is back to full fitness having missed the semi and final of the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
“This is a big game for all of us as a club, every express fc fan has been dreaming about returning to the continent and here we are, we have been preparing ever since we returned from the Kagame cup and I can assure you that we’re ready for al merrick because we know they’re an experienced side especially on the continent but we shall give it our all and try to kill the game from here”. Head coach Wasswa Bossa told the club website.
The game shall be broadcast on Sanyuka TV from the St. Mary’s Stadium.
