Health Minister Ruth Aceng Withdraws From Battle To Replace Deceased Speaker Jacob Oulanyah
The minister for health Dr,.Jane Ruth Aceng has withdrawn from the Speakership race just hours after picking nomination forms.
This has been confirmed by Tanga Odoi, the NRM’s electoral commission chairman this morning that Ruth Aceng has withdrawn from the speakership race,
Aceng confirmed her interest in the speakership race through her Personal Assistant, George William Ssebamala.
A total of four Ministers and 9 Members of Parliament including the Deputy Speaker, Anita Among, expressed their interest in the position of the Speaker of Parliament on Tuesday.
The Thirteen include the current parliament Deputy Speaker, Anita Among seeking to fill her late boss’s position, Jackson Kafuuzi, Sarah Opendi, Theodore Sekikubo, Atima Jackson, Felix Okot Ogong, Jacob Oboth Oboth.
Others include’; Hanson Obua, Alex Brandon, Florence Asiimwe, John Okot Amos, Pius wakabi all seeking to take one position from the same party,
Now as it stands, the number of people who have expressed interest in taking over the speakership mantle has dropped from 13 to 12.
The candidature of the above position is subjected to approval from the NRM CEC meeting that’s set to sit today.
The position of the Speaker fell vacant after the death of Jacob Oulanyah in Seattle, United States this past Sunday.
The late Speaker was elected to that position on May 24, 2021, after defeating the former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.
He had also served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, from May 2011 until May 2021.
Oulanyah was also a member of parliament representing the Omoro County Constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in Uganda’s Northern Region.
