Makerere University Council has announced a total ban on all physical guild elections noting that future elections will be conducted virtually.

This follows the death of a student from Uganda Christian University who was stabbed during the last campaign day of the Makerere guild elections.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Bewatte Betungura, a law student at Uganda Christian University (Kampala Campus) and a resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish Kawempe Division in Kampala who had gone to campaign for his friend Justus Tukamushaba who is standing on the FDC ticket.

“It is alleged that during the open campaigns at rugby grounds Makerere University, a scuffle ensued between supporters of FDC candidate Justus Tukamushaba and those of the National Unity Platform (NUP) that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by the MP Frank Kabuye, among others,” police said in a statement.

Betungura died shortly after reaching Makerere University Hospital where he was rushed bleeding after being stabbed in a scuffle that ensued during the campaigns.

According to a letter from the council chairperson Lorna Magara, the 88thguild elections were indefinitely suspended along with the Guild leadership and the university senior room and any other guild structures on campus.
