The National Drug Authority (NDA) has warned Gulu University against putting “Covilyce”, a herbal product on the market purporting to treat Covid-19 noting that medicines are only permitted to be sold after a successful approval from the authority.

The warning came shortly after the university claimed to have invented Covilyce believed to be a miracle herb in the management of Covid-19.

Even before it is approved by the NDA, residents in Gulu district and the surrounding had asked the university to put it on sale.

Recently, NDA approved the use of Covidex, another herbal concoction as part of the Covid-19 treatment and since that time, the price has continuously gone up due to its increased demand.

However, NDA, said in a statement said that it is not aware of the production of any Covid-19 herbs by the university.

“NDA has not approved this product, it shouldn’t be on the market and the innovators have been warned. They confirmed this product is still under lab research and tests,” the authority stated.

It explained that before it approves a product, it shouldn’t be used as it can’t guarantee its safety.

With vaccines in short supply and Covid-19 infections soaring daily, and hundreds being hospitalized or killed by the virus, the public is frantically searching for remedies to boost immunity or fend off the mass killer disease.

Gulu university’s faculty of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Studies (PharmBiotec), said it needs financial assistance to produce large quantities of their Covid-19 herbal treatments.

Last month, the university said it had more than 70 potential Covid-19 herbs lined up for testing. The procedure was however interrupted by the current lockdown.
