Newly Created Cities Operations Paralyzed By Lack of Funds


Leaders in the newly created cities are crying foul after their work being paralyzed by lack of funds from Government and they want the matters resolved to enable them pay salary arrears of staff that have not been paid for months which they say has hindered service delivery like general cleaning of the cities including garbage collection and other pending projects .The government of Uganda declared 10 new cities including Jinja, Fortportal, Mbarara, Gulu and others .

The ope-rationalization of these cities has failed to take off due to a lack of funding. Mayors of the new cities claim that they no longer have access to the funds which were allocated to them when they were still municipalities.To make matters worse, parliament yesterday blocked the allocation of funds to these newly created cities due to the absence of the instrument within the law to support this move.
The state minister for finance David Bahati also insists that the funds have to be approved by parliament before being allocated to the newly created cities to be kick off their operations
In one of the interviews with a one Willy Kintu Muhangi, the mayor for Fort portal municipality now Fort portal tourism city says their accounts have been ceased and they cant even access the funds that were allocated to them before Fort portal was announced among the new cities .
