Omwaavu Wakuffa: List Of Hospitals With Alarming Charges For Covid-19 Treatment

The surge in Covid-19 cases has caused alarm and panic among members of the public with some instituting their individual lockdowns.

The virus, that attacks largely the respiratory system has so far killed more than 500 people in Uganda.

Some of those who have survived it have not been spared the financial wrath associated with treating those who are in a critical state.

Yet the major beneficiaries of this financial windfall have been the private medical facilities, some of which have adjusted their Covid-19 treatment rates upwards.

In fact, if one spent 20 days in the ICU of some of these facilities, they could spend money that could buy them a decent house in Gayaza and some of the developing suburbs of Kampala.

Already some people have cried out to the government to help rein in the facilities. Col Edith Nakalema, the head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit warned that the government may be forced to intervene and put hospitals to order.

Below we give a breakdown of charges levied by various private health facilities in the treatment of Covid-19.

Medipal Hospital, Acacia Avenue

For those who are in a critical state and need Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services, be prepared to fork out at least Shs 4 million per day. If you spend 10 days at the facility, you will pay Shs 40 million.

Norvik Hospital, Bombo Road

Here, people in ICU are charged Shs 5 million per day while those who cases may be moderate are charged Shs 2.5 million per day.

Case Hospital, Buganda Road

At Case Hospital along Buganda Road, critically ill Covid-19 patients are charged Shs 3 million per day. If you spend two weeks, that translates into Shs 42 million.

IHK, Namuwongo

If you are unable to fork out less than Shs 3million per day, don’t try peeping into IHK. Moderate cases are treated at Shs 1 million per day.

Victoria Hospital, Bukoto

First, you must deposit at least Shs 10 million upfront to get ICU admission. Thereafter, charges range between Shs 3 million and Shs 5 million per day depending on the severity of your case.

Nakasero Hospital

This charges at least Shs 7 million per day for those in ICU. 20 days in Nakasero hospital and you will spend money that can buy you a decent house in one of the residential areas of Gayaza or Kira.
