Opposition MPs endorse Asuman Basalirwa to face off with NRM’s Anita Among for speakership

The opposition political parties have in parliament have endorsed JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa to contest against NRM flag bearer Anita Among for the speakership race to replace late Jacob Oulanyah.
According to sources at parliament, the opposition caucus sat and agreed to vote for their flagbearer in for the Friday elections and they zeroed at Bugiri Municipality legislator who pulled 49 votes against Jonathan Odur who got 20 votes.
Asuman Basalirwa will now battle with Anita Among in the speakership race that climaxes tomorrow Friday during a special sitting at the Kololo Independence grounds.
The Ugandan parliament will tomorrow Friday sit to vote the speaker of the 11th parliament for the next four years.
The speaker position fell vacant after the death of Jacob Oulanyah who died on Sunday last week in Seattle in the US where he had been admitted battling a terminal illness.
According to Article 82(4) of the Constitution of Uganda, no business shall be transacted in Parliament when the office of Speaker is vacant thus the need to vote.
