Peruth Chemutai Wins Uganda’s First  Gold Medal At Tokyo Olympics

Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai has won a gold medal  in the Women’s 3000m steeplechase At Tokyo Olympics 2020

This is Uganda’s first Gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 22-year-old is the first Ugandan to win a gold medal.

Chemutai timed 9min 01.45sec at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, outsprinting American Courtney Frerichs with 250 meters to go to win comfortably.

Frerichs claimed silver in 9:04.79 with Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng taking bronze (9:05.39).

Chemutai becomes the first female Ugandan to ever win an Olympic Gold Medal.

She is also only the third Ugandan to win an Olympics Gold medal Stephen Kiprotich in 2021 and John Akii-Bua in 1972).

The development comes after another Ugandan Nanyondo also qualified for the final in the Women’s 500M race. Nanyondo emerged the fourth in semi-final heat 4 to qualify for this year’s final.
