The National Unity Platform party has dispatched a team of lawyers to rescue some of the threatened positions of their newly elected Members of parliament.
This follows legal suits filed by the opponents of the NUP party candidates who seek to overturn the results on grounds of ‘academic credentials and malpractice’ among others.
Some of the NUP MPs under fire include; the party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi of Nakawa West who is being accused of malpractice, Joyce Bagala (Mityana woman MP), Nsubuga Paul of Busiro North, Mukasa Aloysius of Rubaga South, David Sserukenya of Makindye Ssabagabo, Muhammad Ssegirinya(academic credentials) among others.
The party secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya says this is a deliberate move by the state which is on a mission to trim the mammoth numbers of opposition NUP MPs in the eleventh parliament
“We are aware that the NRM is afraid of having a much bigger crowd of opposition MPs in parliament. They want to use the judiciary to annul the victory of our MPs. We have already unleashed a legal team that will offer legal assistance to our MPs. We are confident that our MPs will retain their slots,” Lewis says. “We all know who rigged the elections. We even find it ridiculous that the perpetrators of malpractice are imposing their allegations on NUP,” he adds.
Similarly, the NUP candidate in Mityana South, Ssematiko Richard also sued the NRM candidate Muhammad Kibedi Nsegumire who reportedly colluded with the district EC returning officers to declare himself as the newly elected MP
