Kampala: Kyambogo University has lost a student and a Staff Member all suspected to have succumbed to Covid-19 complications. The student who has been identified as Doreen Mirembe Juliet succumbed to the deadly COVID-19 after undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital.
The deceased student was in her second academic year pursuing a Bachelor’s of Teacher Education (BTE) before she breathed her last.
The demise comes at a time when the University witnessed a shocking spike in COVID-19 infections amongst the students in the last two weeks.
Also, a staff member at the University, Ms. Sharon Atwine was pronounced dead after post mortem results showed she succumbed to the COVID-19 virus.
The deceased staff member was a Nursery Teacher at the Department of Psychology. Earlier on, the University Management followed advice from a team of health experts led by Dr. Monica Musenero (Senior Presidential Adviser on Epidemics and Pandemic) to close the institution for at least 10 days.
The campus is being closed for a fortnight to combat the virus’s spread. Yesterday, Campus Bee published a viral photo showing patients being airlifted from Kyambogo University West-End Pitch. What was not clear however was the condition in which those patients were, to be airlifted to the hospital.
The president is set to address the nation today on the measures to be employed to combat the resurgence of the deadly pandemic. Rumour has it that the national task force resolved to close schools and institutions of learning until an appropriate solution is come to.
