Student Leaders Petition Speaker Over Increasing Commodity Prices

Different university guild presidents have been arrested by police at parliament.
Guild presidents from the different universities and several opposition politicians made their way to parliament to try and petition the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among over the rising commodity prices which they claim have affected their status and standards of living
The student leaders were led by the Makerere University guild president Shamim Nambasa but they were not allowed to proceed beyond the main gate of parliament
The student leaders were also asked to present evidence of an appointment with the office of the speaker sparking off a bitter exchange between them and parliament security.
Embattled commissioner of parliament who also serves as the Mityana Municipality Mp Francis Zaake was among the people who spoke out against the way police officers manhandled the students who were delivering a petition.
A charged Zaake also vowed to follow up to make sure that the arrested students get released.
Members of Parliament Frank Kabuye of Kassanda south and Derrick Nyeko of Makindye East were also quick to run to the aid of the students.
Since the start of the year, the prices of essential commodities such as cooking oil and soap have gone up something the president has attributed to the Instability in Europe
