Two children have died in a house fire suspected to be an act of arson in Nalumunye, Kasenge, Wakiso district.
Police have identified the deceased as Hussein Lubega, 13 years, and Ali Kabanda, 17 years old who died in a fire that caught one of the houses at Hajj Imam Mwelinde Abdul Karim’s home. Hajji Abdul Karim had been teaching the children Islamic studies at his home.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says they suspect someone could have torched the house. He said the dispatched officers have collected some exhibits including matchboxes suspected to have been used to light fire and a jerrycan of petrol.
“Unfortunately, when fire gutted the room they were staying in, they could not survive. The bodies have been taken to city mortuary Mulago for a postmortem to be carried out,” said Owoyesigyire.
He said Hajji Abdul Karim is currently on the run and efforts are on to have him apprehended as the investigations into the incident continue.
One of the eyewitnesses told police detectives from Nsangi police station that Hajji Abdul Karim has been teaching Islamic lessons to some children during holidays. He explained that by the time of the incident, only two children had returned for the teachings.
