Uganda’s basketball star Ishmail Wainwright signed by NBA side Phoenix Suns

Uganda’s basketball star forward Ishmail Wainwright has signed a two-way contract with the NBA side Phoenix Suns less than a week after leaving the Toronto Raptors. Wainwright is the first player with affiliation to the Uganda basketball team to join the NBA. He plays for the national side Uganda Silverbacks which he also joined last year ahead of the first leg of the 2021 Afro basket Qualifiers in Egypt.
The 27-year-old was Uganda’s best player at Afro basket 2021 in Kigali Rwanda, helping the team to beat star-studded Nigeria to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Wainwright had a solid season in 2021 posting 11.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while he played for SIG Strasbourg which pulled the attention of the Toronto Raptors. The Canada-based team signed Wainwright on a two-year contract on August 7, 2021, before they dropped him on Sunday, October 17 to help the team get the NBA’s maximum roster size of 15 players.

Wainwright shared his excitement on his socials. “Blessed to be a part of the Phoenix Suns family. Time to work,” he posted on his Twitter account.
Phoenix Suns are an American Professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix Suns are a member of the league’s Western Conference in the Pacific Conference and host their games from Footprint Center. The 58-year old team has won the Western conference on three different occasions 1976, 1993, and recently 2021 however they eventually lost the NBA finals to Milwaukee Bucks.
