Victoria University has on Monday August  slashed tuition fees by a half for both joining and continuing students, in a gesture by management to enable learners to study for as low as UGX1 million.

City tycoon Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia who owns the university said the revised tuition policy would stretch and benefit learners for the next three years.

“So as an institution, we decided to look into seeing how we can support the community by reducing the fees by half,” Sudhir said adding that, “This pandemic is not only today but here for the next two [or] three years. So the structure of fees will remain stable and we will review in consultation with the student body and the council and the market. I don’t see us raising our prices for the next two or three years,” he added.

Victoria University acting Vice Chancellor Bill Nkeeto, said the decision was arrived at by university board of directors.

“Now revised edition, with as low as UGX 1million, students can be admitted and pursue a course,” he told reporters as the university launched a revised tuition policy at the University’s auditorium.

The University council chairperson, Mr David Byatika Matovu emphasized the need for cohesion and growth.

“Victoria is going to be built by not anybody else but Ugandans,” Mr Matovu said before asking Ugandans to embrace the development.

Details of the revised scheme indicated that most Bachelor courses will be between UGX1.7m and UGX.2m, Diploma course will be attained at between UGX1m and UGX.1.3M whereas programs offered at Masters Level will go for a fee not exceeding UGX2.4m.

This will break the norm held by many that Uganda’s private universities are annoyingly expensive.

Victoria University is a cosmopolitan institution of learning accredited by the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) and attracts learners from over different countries.

A recruitment team will be trained and ingrained on ways of enrollment and later dished out to communities in the countryside to fetch students at a commission that wasn’t disclosed. Interested candidates have been advised to login on the University website and follow prompts or call contacts for further guidance on how to benefit on the new development.
