We Don’t Need Your Advice: Museveni Hits Back At Kiiza Besigye On Schools Reopening
The son of Amos Kaguta, Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has watered down Dr.Besigye’s recent advice and suggestions regarding reopening of schools amidst the Covid pandemic.
Besigye recently said that closing schools is doing more harm than good adding that there is no justification for the government to keep schools closed even after the lockdown was eased.
The closure of schools is a generational catastrophe, this address is not for Mr. Museveni and his wife, and it’s for the parents and schooling children. Parents must step up to avert this catastrophe. We need a master plan and it will not be made by the NRM regime” Besigye said.
“For Uganda to shut our schools for over a year is the most heinous crime. There is no justification for the measures that have been taken against schools. We’ve known children are least affected by COVID-19. Why should you shut down schools for knowledge acquisition because of Covid,” he added
Besigye further noted that the young and school-going children are least vulnerable to Covid and therefore the government should reopen schools.
However, Museveni does not think the same way as Besigye does, speaking on Thursday during the function to mark International Youth Day at Kololo Independence grounds, the president said that by continuing to keep schools closed, the government is aware of what it is doing and needs no advice from anyone.
“The other day I heard my friend Dr.Besigye talking about the opening of schools … that schools should open… that these people don’t have a plan. He was saying the government doesn’t have a plan that if we had immunized teachers, schools could open…..okay thank you very much Dr.Besigye but you have not thought the problem through properly,” Museveni said.
“Actually the teachers are on our priority list for our immunization list and I think many of them have already been immunized.”
According to Museveni, even if teachers are immunized, it would be dangerous to allow schools to reopen since few of them are for only the boarding section which he said would mean that the learners would infect their parents back home.
“Is that Dr.Besigye wants or he didn’t remember that majority of schools are day schools? “
